June 11, (THEWILL) – In a rain-disrupted finale on Sunday evening, Andy Murray emerged victorious at the Surbiton Trophy, defeating Austrian player, Jurij Rodionov, in a dominant performance, 6-3 6-2.
After going through a four-year trophy drought, Murray aimed to continue his winning streak after triumphing at the Aix-en-Provence ATP Challenger on clay last month, as THEWILL reported.
Rodionov, 12 years Murray’s junior at 24, initially posed a challenge, leading the first set 30-40 as the match began. However, Murray held his ground and earned a crucial break in the sixth game, propelling him to a commanding 4-2 lead.
Maintaining his momentum, Murray continued to impress in the second set, mirroring his earlier success. He pushed Rodionov during his first service game and subsequently took advantage of a break opportunity, solidifying his advantage.
The match was temporarily suspended due to heavy rain when Murray was leading 3-1 and had an opportunity to break Rodionov’s serve once more. After an almost three-hour delay, play resumed, and Murray wasted no time in finishing the break and holding serve, quickly advancing to a 5-1 lead.
Rodionov valiantly held off defeat for one more game but ultimately fell short as Murray sealed his victory with a powerful ace and secured his first grasscourt title in seven years.
Following the match, a visibly delighted Murray expressed his joy in winning the title, highlighting the significance of his children witnessing his triumph.
