Swiatek

November 28, (THEWILL) – Polish tennis star, Iga Swiatek, has accepted a one-month suspension after testing positive for trimetazidine, a banned substance, in an out-of-competition sample from August 2024. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed that the contamination occurred in her over-the-counter melatonin medication, which she was taking to manage jet lag and sleep issues.

The ITIA determined that Swiatek bore no significant fault in the incident, classifying it at the lowest end of the disciplinary range. Her provisional suspension ran from September 12th to October 4th, causing her to miss three tournaments and forfeit prize money from the Cincinnati Open. During this period, Swiatek experienced significant emotional strain, describing the ordeal as the “worst experience of my life” in a statement.

Laboratory testing at the WADA-accredited SMRTL facility in Salt Lake City verified low doses of trimetazidine in both opened and sealed containers of her melatonin product. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) publicly acknowledged the ITIA’s decision, emphasising Swiatek’s consistent commitment to fair play and the challenges athletes face when navigating medication use.

The incident resulted in Swiatek losing her world number one ranking to Aryna Sabalenka, who ended the year at the top spot. Swiatek continued to compete in major tournaments, including the US Open, where she reached the quarter-finals, and the WTA Finals in Riyadh, where she did not advance from the group stage.

This case follows a similar recent incident involving men’s top-ranked player Jannik Sinner, who was also subject to an anti-doping investigation. ITIA Chief Executive Karen Moorhouse stressed that these were not intentional doping cases but inadvertent rule breaches, maintaining transparency in the sport’s anti-doping programme.
