November 7, (THEWILL) – Iga Swiatek produced a masterful performance to clinch the WTA Finals title on Monday, thrashing American, Jessica Pegula, 6-1, 6-0 in Texas. The Polish star was in imperious form, overwhelming her opponent to seal her 17th career title.
The 22-year-old barely put a foot wrong, dominating from the baseline and controlling play throughout the 59-minute match. Swiatek lost just 20 games across the entire tournament, setting a new record for the fewest games dropped by a champion at the season-ending championships.
Second seed Swiatek broke Pegula five times while only facing one break point herself, which she saved. It was a ruthless display from the three-time French Open champion, who hit six unforced errors to Pegula’s 23.
The win caps a phenomenal year for Swiatek, who will finish 2023 as world number one for the second straight season. Pegula had no complaints about the result, admitting: “It was just one of those days where I felt like I was going for too much.”
The American could not handle the consistency and accuracy of Swiatek, who moves to 4-1 in career meetings between the pair. Pegula defeated Swiatek in Montreal in August but found her power game neutralised in Texas. Swiatek now heads into the off-season full of confidence as the number one.
