June 10, (THEWILL) – Iga Swiatek clinched her third French Open title in a hard-fought final battle against Karolina Muchova, to prevail 6-2 5-7 6-4 on Saturday, and becomes the first woman since 2007 to successfully defend the Roland Garros title.
Muchova entered the final as the fourth lowest-ranked woman in the tournament, ranked 43rd in the world. Despite her underdog status, she had previously defeated top-ranked players in five matches, including a stunning upset against Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals. However, Swiatek’s relentless pressure and strong start propelled her to an early lead, securing a break in the second game and maintaining her dominance throughout the opening set.
The second set witnessed a back-and-forth struggle between the two players. Swiatek initially gained a 3-0 advantage, but Muchova showcased her resilience by making a comeback, levelling the score at three games apiece. That was when the reigning champion experienced a moment of nervousness, double-faulting to grant Muchova an opportunity to serve for the set at 5-4. Although Swiatek broke back, Muchova seized her chance and forced a decider by winning the second set.
The momentum seemed to favour Muchova as she claimed an early break in the third set, establishing a 2-0 lead. However, Swiatek, known for her strong performances at Roland Garros, mounted a remarkable comeback, winning three consecutive games. With a combination of powerful shots and nerve-wracking moments, Swiatek sealed the victory, ultimately triumphing over Muchova in a thrilling contest.
Swiatek’s triumph at Roland Garros signifies another dominant performance on the clay courts of Paris, where she boasts an impressive record of 28 wins and only two losses across five appearances. The 22-year-old Polish player has now won each of her first four Grand Slam finals, joining the ranks of Monica Seles and Naomi Osaka, the only other players to achieve this feat in the Open era. Swiatek’s consecutive French Open titles also make her the youngest woman to accomplish this since Monica Seles in the early 1990s.
