May 4, (THEWILL)- Iga Swiatek produced a spectacular comeback to deny Aryna Sabalenka a successful title defence at the Madrid Open on Saturday. The 21-year-old Pole saved three match points en route to a thrilling 7-5 4-6 7-6(7) victory over the Belarusian in the final of the WTA 1000 claycourt event.
Trailing 1-3 in the deciding set, the world number one demonstrated her renowned fighting spirit, clawing her way back to force a tiebreak. Sabalenka appeared poised to claim her third Madrid crown when she earned a match point at 6-5 in the breaker, but Swiatek refused to surrender. The top seed saved that chance and another at 7-7 before converting her own match point to seal a hard-fought triumph after three hours and 21 minutes.
The victory extends Swiatek’s remarkable winning streak in finals to eight matches and sees her join Elena Rybakina at the top of the 2023 leaderboard with 30 tour-level wins. Moreover, the 22-year-old has now won each of the European clay tournaments at least once, complementing her trio of French Open titles at Roland Garros.
In her on-court speech, Swiatek paid tribute to the tenacious Sabalenka, saying: “Aryna, to many more finals! It’s always a challenge playing you. Thanks for always motivating me and forcing me to be a better player.” For her part, Sabalenka remained upbeat despite the agonising defeat, declaring: “Hopefully next year it goes to me.”
The blockbuster showdown adds further anticipation to the rapidly approaching French Open, where Swiatek will bid to extend her dominance on clay against the relentless challenge of peers like Sabalenka.
