April 14, (THEWILL) – Polish goalkeeper, Wojciech Szczesny, has reassured fans and the media that he is doing fine after experiencing heart palpitations during Juventus’ UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie against Sporting CP.
The incident occurred during the first half of the match, with Szczesny leaving the field in tears and being replaced by Mattia Perin. Fortunately, an electrogram conducted by medical staff determined that there was no issue with his heart.
After the match, Juventus tweeted that Szczesny was “doing well” and the goalkeeper himself confirmed that “everything is fine”.
“It was a fright,” Szczesny said. “It’s something that’s never happened to me before. I had trouble breathing so I was a bit anxious, it was a bit of a scare, but now I’m much better. I was a bit anxious about it but we’ve done all the checks and everything is fine.” He even joked about being replaced by Perin, saying “the truth is Mattia has been doing so well in training I let him come on.”
Despite the scare, Juventus managed to secure a 1-0 win over Sporting CP, thanks to a goal from Federico Gatti. Perin also made crucial saves in the second half to help the team take a one-goal advantage into the second leg. The winner of the tie will face either Manchester United or Sevilla in the semi-finals.
