April 27, (THEWILL) – Bournemouth took a significant step towards English Premier League safety with a 1-0 victory over neighbours, Southampton, thanks to a deflected goal from Marcus Tavernier.
The only goal of the game came just four minutes into the second half when Tavernier cut in from the right and his shot deflected off Saints defender, Duje Caleta-Car, into the bottom corner. Despite late pressure from the home side, a VAR check ruled out a Che Adams goal for offside.
Both teams got off to a lively start, with chances at either end before Tavernier’s deflected goal proved to be the difference between the two sides. The win lifts the Cherries to 14th in the table, seven points clear of the relegation zone with just five games to play. On the other hand, the Saints sit rock bottom, six points from safety after losing at home to Cherries for only the second time in their history.
The result leaves Southampton with the difficult task to avoid relegation, while Bournemouth’s third successive EPL win on the road gives them a cushion over the teams below them.
They will be confident heading into their next game against Leeds, while Saints will be looking to bounce back against Newcastle.
