February 19, (THEWILL) – La Liga president, Javier Tebas, has admitted worries over the ongoing financial issues at Barcelona but believes the Catalan club can find solutions. Speaking in an interview with Portuguese outlet A Bola this week, Tebas discussed Barça’s monetary troubles, which predate the COVID pandemic but have since worsened.
Barcelona’s heavy spending and massive wage bills in recent years left them vulnerable when revenues plunged due to the coronavirus. With matchday income decimated and costly contracts still needing payment, Barcelona have struggled to balance the books. They even had to let superstar Lionel Messi leave on a free transfer.
Things have slowly improved under club president Joan Laporta’s cost-cutting efforts since he took over in 2021. However, Tebas concedes that there are still serious financial problems for Barcelona to grapple with in light of La Liga’s stringent regulations.
“It worries me,” admitted Tebas. “But it doesn’t worry me too much, as I know the club has mechanisms to get itself out of this situation.”
He expressed confidence that Barcelona can right the ship but stressed that difficult decisions lie ahead, with aggressive or unpopular measures potentially needed to safeguard the club’s future.
