May 21, (THEWILL) – Brighton and Hove Albion made history by securing a place in European competition for the first time in their club’s existence, following a resounding 3-1 triumph over Southampton at the Amex Stadium in the English Premier League on Sunday.
The team’s teenage striker, Evan Ferguson, played a key role in the victory by scoring two goals. With 61 points in their sixth place in the league standings, Brighton can be longer be overtaken by eighth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, guaranteeing their participation in Europe next season. Brighton took the lead in the 29th minute through an impressive strike from Ferguson, which slipped past Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy. Building on their advantage, the team showcased a moment of brilliance 10 minutes later when Kaoru Mitoma skillfully outmanoeuvred Romeo Lavia on the left wing, delivering a precise cross with the outside of his boot to set up Ferguson for his second goal of the match.
Although Southampton’s Mohamed Elyounoussi managed to pull one back in the 58th minute, any hopes of a comeback were swiftly extinguished by Pascal Gross. The midfielder displayed his skill by cutting inside onto his left foot and unleashing a low shot past two defenders, securing Brighton’s victory. Southampton, already relegated and sitting at the bottom of the table, remain on 24 points.
Brighton & Hove Albion will face Manchester City in their next match on Wednesday, while Southampton is set to take on Liverpool on Sunday.
