November 02, (THEWILL) – Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he felt sorry for the club’s supporters after another dreadful performance resulted in a 3-0 home defeat to Newcastle United’s second-string side in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Wednesday.
As THEWILL reported, the Red Devils were humbled at Old Trafford for the second time in three days, with goals from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock piling more misery on Ten Hag’s men after Sunday’s loss to rivals Manchester City. Despite fielding a relatively strong starting XI, United lacked any attacking threat and the result was never in doubt once Almiron had put Newcastle ahead early in the second half.
While Newcastle’s 8,000 travelling fans revelled in their team’s comfortable victory, thousands of United supporters headed for the exits well before the final whistle – a sadly familiar sight at Old Trafford this season.
“We know this is not good enough. We have to take responsibility for it, I have to take responsibility for it,” Ten Hag commented after the match. “We don’t give the performance, so I feel sorry for the fans. It is below our standards and we have to put it right.”
Ten Hag insisted his players were still united and would “stand up” to turn things around, starting with Saturday’s EPL match against Fulham. The Dutchman acknowledged it would require greater discipline and togetherness from his squad. “You have to be disciplined and you have to do it with togetherness, everyone has to take responsibility, be accountable and co-operate. That’s the keyword,” he said.
