December 8, (THEWILL) – Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, has suggested the club are unlikely to spend big money pursuing new players in the January 2023 transfer window, despite a difficult start to the 2023/2024 season.
Speaking to United We Stand, Ten Hag explained: “I don’t think we’ll spend a lot. As a club, you have to look for improvements, so if you can find better and it’s realistic financially and with Financial Fair Play, the club has to go with it. But most of the time you don’t attract the best players in the winter.”
United have lost 10 games across all competitions so far this campaign. Although around £190 million was spent over the summer, Ten Hag admitted there is still work to be done on the squad. However, a combination of Financial Fair Play restrictions and limited availability of signings in January looks set to restrict business.
United have been contacted by intermediaries about Serhou Guirassy, the prolific Stuttgart striker. With 16 goals in 11 Bundesliga games this term, the Guinea international could be available for his £15.2 million release clause. However, African Cup of Nations participation could complicate any mid-season transfer.
While United have previously signed winter window stars like Nemanja Vidic and Bruno Fernandes, January has often been about meeting emergency squad needs on loan, like current striker Wout Weghorst. The club will likely take a similar cautious approach this January.
