October 23, (THEWILL) – In Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea, defender Raphael Varane left the match with a noticeable limp, and Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was asked for an update on the condition of the defender post-match.
Varane was visibly upset by the injury and appeared to be in tears as he left the field, especially with concerns about the possibility of missing the FIFA World Cup coming up next month. However, the ability of the 29-year-old French international to leave on foot rather than on a stretcher will be comforting to United’s supporters.
Answering reporters’ questions about the extent of the World Cup-threatening injury, Ten Hag said: “It is difficult to say how it is now because it is so soon after the game. We have to wait 24 hours and then we will know what it is. I can understand, we can all probably understand he would be emotional [if he is out of the World Cup], but I think he also has to wait.
“You don’t know [how bad it is]. Of course, he is experienced, but [the] medical [staff] have to do their job, have to make the assessment and set the right diagnosis, and then from there on can come to a conclusion.”
After a shaky start to the season, United rebounded to find themselves back in the mix for European football. The draw at Stamford Bridge keeps them fifth and they will host West Ham next weekend in an effort to keep up their outstanding league run.
