August 26, (THEWILL) – Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, did not mince his words when criticising his players for their lacklustre performance in last weekend’s 2-0 defeat away to Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s home match against Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag said the players “didn’t run” and “didn’t recover” in the second half after a promising start. He particularly took issue with the front players in particular, saying they failed to do their defensive duties and “run in the wrong moments.” He said the lack of effort was uncharacteristic of this United team and not up to the high standards demanded at the club.
Ten Hag shouldered some of the blame but emphasised the players have the quality to win games if they fulfil their roles. The Dutch manager was especially frustrated that United dominated the first 35 minutes but then got “distracted” and conceded two preventable goals. He said the players must maintain focus and effort for a full 90 minutes, home or away if they want to meet expectations.
The manager is eager to avoid a repeat of last season’s dismal away form that nearly cost them a UEFA Champions League spot. Saturday’s match against Nottingham Forest gives United a chance to bounce back from the humbling Spurs defeat.
Ten Hag will demand a much-improved effort and laser focus from his players as he looks to instil a winning mentality in the Old Trafford club. Fans expect a response after the manager’s strong criticism this weekend.
