August 31, (THEWILL) – Arsenal’s winning start to the 2024/2025 English Premier League, season came to an end on Saturday, as they drew 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners took the lead through Kai Havertz in the 38th minute, but were pegged back after Declan Rice was sent off early in the second half.
Havertz, gave Arsenal the advantage before halftime, finishing deftly past Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, after being played through by Bukayo Saka. However, the match swung in Brighton’s favour just, four minutes after the restart when Rice, received a second yellow card for kicking the ball away following a foul on Joel Veltman.
Brighton capitalised on their numerical advantage in the 59th minute through Joao Pedro. The Brazilian forward was quickest to react after David Raya had parried Yankuba Minteh’s close-range effort, slotting home to level the scores. Despite going down to 10 men, Arsenal had chances to retake the lead, with Havertz forcing a good save from Verbruggen after a powerful run.
The visitors pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with substitute Yasin Ayari testing Raya with a threatening shot. However, Arsenal’s defence held firm to secure a point. The result leaves the Gunners still top of the table, but their lead has been cut following this first slip-up of the campaign.
The match was a closely fought affair throughout, with both sides creating opportunities. In the end, a draw was perhaps a fair result given the balance of play and the impact of Rice’s dismissal.
