April 10, (THEWILL) – Frances Tiafoe battled through a grueling double-duty day in Houston to win the ATP clay court title, defeating Thomas Etcheverry 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (8/6).
The American, playing his first ATP tournament as the top seed, had to win twice on Sunday to secure the crown, after weather delays earlier in the week caused scheduling disruptions. Tiafoe did not disappoint, coming out on top in both matches to claim his second ATP title.
THEWILL recalls that after beating Gijs Brouwer in the semifinals, Tiafoe told the crowd: “I’m running on adrenaline. I’m on a mission so I’m happy.” His determination and drive were evident throughout the day, as he powered through his matches and sealed the title.
The soggy week meant Tiafoe had to win four matches in just two days, but he rose to the occasion and did not drop a set, displaying his impressive form on clay. “It’s been a long week, and I played some great tennis. I just want to enjoy this one,” Tiafoe said after the final.
His victory marks a welcome return to form after he had come up short in four previous finals appearances.
