September 11, (THEWILL) – Frances Tiafoe, who reached the semi-finals of the US Open, has withdrawn from the American Davis Cup team that will compete in group round matches in Glasgow, Scotland, next week, the USTA confirmed on Saturday.
The 24-year-old from Maryland, who was ranked 22nd at Flushing Meadows, became the first American man to reach the US Open quarterfinals since Andy Roddick finished as the tournament’s runner-up in 2006, three years after he won the trophy as the last American man to take home a Grand Slam title.
The 19-year-old Spaniard and number three seed Carlos Alcaraz defeated Tiafoe in five sets, to put an end to his remarkable run which included ending Rafael Nadal’s 22-match winning streak at major events in the fourth round, as he enthralled spectators in Arthur Ashe Stadium with his brilliant tennis and unabashed passion.
In the final on Sunday, Alcaraz will face number seed Casper Ruud of Norway. The winner will win his first Grand Slam title and move up to number one in the ATP rankings for the first time.
The USTA announced that Tiafoe would not be replaced on the Davis Cup roster for the Americans, who will begin play on Wednesday against Britain. Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Jack Sock, and Rajeev Ram are the other Americans that are currently competing.
