October 18, (THEWILL) — President Bola Tinubu has returned to Abuja after attending the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government-level Meeting held in Rome, Italy.
The high-level summit, which took place on Wednesday at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, focused on strengthening regional and global cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism, with special attention to West Africa.
Launched in 2015 by King Abdullah II of Jordan, the Aqaba Process is a counter-terrorism initiative co-chaired by Jordan and Italy.
Since its inception, it has hosted 33 meetings across various levels, promoting collaboration through prevention, coordination, and operational intelligence sharing.
Wednesday’s meeting was attended by King Abdullah II, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the Presidents of Nigeria, Chad, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, and Togo, as well as Algeria’s Upper House President, Azouz Nasri. Delegations from other nations, security experts, and special envoys also participated in the closed-door sessions.
On the sidelines of the summit, President Tinubu held bilateral discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, U.S. Senior Adviser on Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, and the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
Talks with Cardinal Parolin focused on promoting interfaith harmony in Nigeria and countering disinformation that misrepresents the country as intolerant of religious diversity.
The President’s return to Abuja on Saturday marks the conclusion of his participation in what has become one of the leading global platforms for advancing international counter-terrorism coordination.
