April 10, (THEWILL) – At Augusta National, golf world number one, Scottie Scheffler, lived up to the hype, and with a three-stroke victory at the Masters, won his maiden major championship on Sunday night.
Scheffler had a three-shot lead going into the day, and he maintained it by closing with a 1-under 71.
He won for the fourth time in his past six tournaments, finishing at 10-under 278 overall. Even though he made a double-bogey on the final hole, it did not matter because he was in such a comfortable lead.
Rory McIlroy finished second after shooting 64, but he was 10 strokes down going into the day and was never a real threat to Scheffler.
It appeared early on that Scheffler would be challenged by Cameron Smith.
After starting the round with two straight birdies, the Australian came within a stroke of the lead. But Scheffler chipped in for an improbable birdie at No. 3, Smith bogeyed, and after that two-shot swing, it was not even close.
Smith’s final hurrah was a birdie on the difficult 11th hole, which cut the deficit to three strokes. However, at the renowned 12th hole in Amen Corner, the Australian dumped one in the water, ending his chances with a triple-bogey.
Smith shot 73 and tied for third place with Shane Lowry, five strokes behind the winner.
McIlroy played the best round of the day, which included a birdie on the 18th hole after holing out from a bunker. But he will have to wait another year to complete the career Grand Slam.
Scheffler, the 25-year-old Texan, takes home the green jacket for 2022.
