June 29, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur have successfully finalised the transfer of James Maddison from Leicester City, with the player agreeing to a contract that will see him at the club until the summer of 2028.
Spurs’ coach, Ange Postecoglou, had been advocating for Maddison’s recruitment as one of his primary summer signings, and an agreement was reached this week. The total transfer fee, considering all add-ons, could potentially escalate to £45m, although Leicester had initially aimed for a figure around £60m.
Even as the Foxes grappled with challenges that led to their relegation to the Championship, Maddison’s performance during the 2022/2023 season was noteworthy. The 26-year-old midfielder notched up 10 English Premier League goals and provided nine assists in 30 appearances. In all these, he exhibited a unique array of skills that distinguished him from his new Spurs colleagues.
Maddison’s skills also earned him a spot in the England squad, where he was in the starting line-up for the wins against Ukraine and Malta in March and June respectively. THEWILL recalls that the senior career of the 26-year-old kicked off at his local club, Coventry, and he later gained recognition with Norwich, netting 14 goals in the Championship during the 2017/2018 season. This led to a £20m move to the King Power grounds.
Throughout his stint at Leicester, Maddison showed consistent improvement, achieving double-digit EPL goals in the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 seasons. He also participated in the Europa League and Europa Conference League, and was a member of the Leicester team that triumphed in the FA Cup in 2021 alongside Nigerian teammates, Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi.
