July 24, (THEWILL) – English Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur have announced the signing of goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini from Italian side Atalanta. Gollini will join the north Londoners on a season-long loan, with an option to make the transfer permanent at next season’s end.
The goalkeeper was born in Bologna and played his youth football at Verona and Manchester United. In September 2014, he returned to Verona to make his senior career debut in Serie A. Gollini made 27 appearances for Verona in the 2015/2016 season that drew the interests of Aston Villa.
In July, 2016 Villa brought Gollini back to the EPL. Although he was on the bench when Spurs beat Villa 2-0 in the FA Cup third round at White Hart Lane in January, 2017, Gollini played 20 matches for Villa in the Championship in the 2016/2017 campaign.
The goalkeeper moved back to Italy initially on loan at Atalanta in late January of 2017, and then, was permanently signed in June 2018 by the Serie A side. The 26-year-old has featured 108 times in all competitions for the Bergamo club, including 10 appearances in the Champions League in the last two seasons.
Atalanta finished the 2020/2021 season in third place, scoring freely and challenging finishers Inter Milan and AC Milan all the way to the end while finishing as runners-up to Juventus in the Coppa Italia. It was Gollini whose 32 appearances helped to keep that form going.
Internationally, Gollini has been capped at Under-18, 19, 20 and 21 levels for Italy in a clear demonstration of his consistency. For his senior debut, he came off the bench in a Euro 2020 qualifying match against Bosnia & Herzegovina in November, 2019.
The deal is subject to international clearance which ought not to be an obstacle to his move to Spurs.
