August 29, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur suffered an early cup exit on Tuesday, after losing 5-3 on penalties to Fulham in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
The match had ended 1-1 after 90 minutes at Craven Cottage. Fulham took the lead in the 19th minute when an own goal from Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven put the hosts ahead. However, Richarlison equalised for Spurs just before the hour mark to make it 1-1. No further goals came after that, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.
Both sides were flawless from the spot until Davinson Sanchez had his effort saved by Fulham keeper, Marek Rodak. Kenny Tete then scored the decisive penalty to knock Spurs out and send Fulham through to the third round.
It was a disappointing night for Tottenham in their first cup match under new manager Ange Postecoglou. They fielded a rotated side but wanted to progress further than the second round stage.
In the end, Fulham prevailed on penalties to claim a morale-boosting win over their London rivals. The Cottagers can now look forward to the next round while Spurs will have to focus solely on the English Premier League for now.
