May 28, (THEWILL) – Leeds United’s three-season tenure in the English Premier League has come to an end following a resounding 4-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur in their final home game.
Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Pedro Porro found the back of the net early in each half, establishing a 2-0 lead. Although Jack Harrison managed to reduce the deficit for Leeds, Kane struck again to seal the victory for Spurs, in what could potentially be his final appearance for the London club. In stoppage time, Tottenham substitute, Lucas Moura, added insult to injury with a goal, compounding Leeds’ misery.
Leeds faced an uphill battle on the final day of the season, not only needing a win but also relying on their relegation rivals Everton and Leicester to drop points. However, both of those teams emerged victorious, rendering Leeds’ 21st league defeat of the season inconsequential.
The home side’s hopes of a clean sheet were dashed in the second minute of the match when Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min exposed the porous defence to carve open an early opportunity for Tottenham. The ease with which Kane found space to extend the visitors’ lead epitomised the struggles that Leeds has faced throughout the season.
Despite the impending relegation, Leeds’ passionate supporters remained defiant, filling Elland Road with their chants, including the ironic “We’re going down.” The players fought valiantly to repay their fans’ unwavering loyalty but lacked the necessary confidence and quality to turn the tide in their favour.
Leeds boss, Sam Allardyce, could only watch from the dugout as his team squandered numerous chances, including a missed header from Robin Koch and a deflected shot from Pascal Struijk. As the match progressed, Leeds grew increasingly desperate, while Tottenham capitalised on the counterattack for Porro’s second goal and Moura’s late strike.
