November 10, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, James Maddison, has been ruled out of England’s upcoming international matches due to an ankle injury, the club confirmed on Friday.
Maddison sustained the injury during Spurs’ 4-1 defeat against rivals, Chelsea, on Monday night. Though the extent of the issue is still unclear, Tottenham announced that the 25-year-old will not join up with Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia this month.
“We can confirm that James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury,” the club statement read. “The midfielder will not feature in the Three Lions’ UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers and will remain at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the Club’s medical staff.”
Tottenham boss, Ange Postecoglou, is expected to provide an update on Maddison’s fitness on Friday, ahead of his side’s English Premier League clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend.
The withdrawal is a blow for both club and country. England manager, Southgate, has already expressed concerns over losing more players to injury before the matches. Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka is also a doubt after picking up a knock against Sevilla on Wednesday.
