June 06, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur dismissed manager Ange Postecoglou on Friday afternoon, ending the Australian’s two-year tenure at the north London club.
The 59-year-old, who joined from Celtic in June 2023, was relieved of his duties following what the club described as a comprehensive performance review.
Chairman Daniel Levy made the decision despite Postecoglou delivering the club’s first major trophy in 17 years with their UEFA Europa League triumph last month.
The sacking comes after Tottenham endured their worst English Premier League campaign since their relegation season of 1976/1977. Spurs managed just 16 victories from 38 league matches, suffering 22 defeats to finish 17th in the table.
Only Leicester City, Ipswich Town, and Southampton, all of whom were relegated, recorded fewer points than Tottenham’s disappointing 54-point tally.
Postecoglou’s Europa League success in May had temporarily lifted spirits around White Hart Lane, with the Australian becoming the first manager to bring European silverware to the club since Bill Nicholson’s UEFA Cup triumph in 1972.
However, the board concluded that domestic struggles outweighed continental achievement when conducting their end-of-season analysis.
The club’s official statement emphasised that the decision was reached unanimously by the board after “significant reflection” on performances throughout the 2024/2025 season.
“Whilst winning the Europa League this season ranks as one of the club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions aligned to this triumph,” the statement read.
The hierarchy determined that a managerial change was necessary for the club’s long-term interests.
Tottenham will now begin their search for a fifth permanent manager since Mauricio Pochettino’s departure in November 2019.
The club’s recent managerial appointments have included José Mourinho, Nuno Espírito Santo, and Antonio Conte, with none lasting more than two full seasons.
Academy coach Ryan Mason is expected to take temporary charge while the board identifies potential candidates for the permanent position.
