June 06, (THEWILL) – Ange Postecoglou, the former manager of Celtic, has been appointed as the new head coach of English Premier League side, Tottenham Hotspur.
The 57-year-old Australian has signed a four-year contract with the north London club, with the official announcement of his appointment scheduled later on Tuesday. Postecoglou emerged as the frontrunner for the position last week, and Spurs were close to finalising the deal over the weekend.
Postecoglou’s arrival at Tottenham follows two highly successful seasons at Celtic, where he led the team to reclaim the Scottish Premiership title from Rangers in his debut campaign. Additionally, he guided Celtic to victory in the Scottish League Cup and achieved a domestic treble last season. Prior to his tenure at Celtic, Postecoglou managed the Australia men’s team and the Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos, which is partially owned by the City Football Group.
Tottenham have been actively seeking a candidate who can bring about cultural change and revitalise the team’s style of play. Arne Slot, who currently coaches Feyenoord, was initially considered a top contender before deciding to remain at his current club. Other options included Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen and former Bayern Munich manager, Julian Nagelsmann.
The search for a new head coach began after Antonio Conte left Tottenham by mutual consent in March, following his critical remarks about the players’ attitude. Since then, the team has seen temporary appointments including Ryan Mason, who could only secure two victories out of six matches and led the team to an eighth-place finish in the EPL, missing out on European football for the upcoming season.
