April 30, (THEWILL) – Toulouse clinched their first major trophy under their current form, outplaying holders, Nantes, to win 5-1 in the Coupe de France final.
Their first successful trophy run since their old club Toulouse FC won it in 1957, took off when centre-back, Logan Costa, opened the scoring in the fourth minute, heading home Branco van den Boomen’s corner. Six minutes later, Stijn Spierings’ cross allowed Costa to nod in from close range after a half-clearance.
Thijs Dallinga then added two more to Toulouse’s tally, dinking the ball past Alban Lafont after a pass from Gabriel Suazo, and tapping in his second after Lafont saved from Fares Chaibi. Nantes managed to get a goal back from the penalty spot, but Zakaria Aboukhlal’s swift response meant that Toulouse ended up with an emphatic 5-1 victory. Moses Simon could not help his team recover and was substituted after 46 minutes.
Gabriel Suazo came up with a crucial goal-line clearance, preventing Mostafa Mohamed from getting a goal back for Nantes. Despite having Ludovic Blas convert a penalty in the latter stages of the game, Nantes were completely outplayed by Toulouse. This defeat has put them in a precarious position as they look to stay in Ligue 1 with their 16th position on the log. They have a League match against Brest on Wednesday.
On the other hand, Toulouse will be brimming with confidence as they prepare for their upcoming fixture against Lens on Tuesday. The manner of their victory in the Coupe de France final was impressive and will serve as a huge boost for them as they look to push on and achieve further success.
