March 22, (THEWILL) – A tragic incident in Imo State on Thursday led to the death of a 16-year-old student, Paul Victor, allegedly shot by a 64-year-old legal practitioner, Barrister Donald Mbamah.
The victim, a Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) student of Urban Development Secondary School, Area N, World Bank, was reportedly playing football with friends when the ball landed inside the suspect’s compound.
According to eyewitnesses, the orphaned teenager attempted to retrieve the ball by jumping over the fence when he was shot in the buttocks.
He was rushed to the hospital but was later confirmed dead.
Confirming the incident, the Imo State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, disclosed in a statement that police operatives arrested the suspect following a distress call from a concerned neighbor.
“The Imo State Police Command has arrested Barrister Donald Mbamah, a 64-year-old man, in connection with the shooting of a 16-year-old student, Paul Victor, on March 17, 2025. The incident occurred at approximately 12:34 PM at Mbamah’s residence in Area N, World Bank, New Owerri,” the statement read.
It further noted that officers from the New Owerri Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), responded swiftly, apprehending the suspect and rushing the victim to General Hospital, Umuguma. Despite medical efforts, the boy succumbed to his injuries on March 20, 2025.
Following the incident, the police transferred Barrister Mbamah to the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for questioning.
The statement added that a thorough investigation is underway, with efforts ongoing to recover the firearm allegedly used in the shooting.
“The Imo State Police Command expresses its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and assures the public that justice will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law. The suspect will be arraigned in court once investigations are completed and sufficient evidence is gathered,” the statement added.
The police further urged the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course, warning against any form of mob action.
