March 30, (THEWILL) — A joyous wedding celebration in Kahir village, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, turned into a night of terror on Sunday after heavily armed bandits stormed the venue, killing at least 13 people, abducting several others, and leaving scores injured in one of the latest mass-casualty attacks to hit Nigeria’s troubled North-West region.
The attack, which occurred at about 11:47 p.m., has been confirmed by police authorities in Kaduna State, who said they are still compiling full details of the incident, including the exact number of persons taken away by the assailants.
According to a community leader, Musa Adamu, the attackers arrived in large numbers. They wielded sophisticated weapons, forcing their way into the wedding hall before opening fire indiscriminately on guests who had gathered to celebrate.
Witnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as attendees scrambled for safety, with many caught in the crossfire. Several guests sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to the General Hospital in Kagarko, while victims with more severe conditions were referred to medical facilities in Kaduna metropolis for urgent treatment.
Residents said the gunmen operated for nearly an hour without any form of resistance, effectively taking control of the community and surrounding areas. During the prolonged attack, the assailants reportedly looted nearby shops, carting away food items, provisions, and pharmaceutical supplies from a local chemist, further deepening the community’s losses.
Security sources confirmed that a manhunt has since been launched to track down the perpetrators, with authorities vowing that efforts are underway to ensure the attackers are apprehended and brought to justice.
The latest massacre underscores the worsening insecurity in Northern Nigeria.
