December 17, (THEWILL) – As part of its mission to advance sports in Nigeria, the recently established Nigerian Coaches Association, NCA, stated that one of its top focuses will be the training of coaches.
After electing its executive committee and holding its inaugural meeting at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, the NCA emphasised that successful Nigerian sports depend on coaches and that it is crucial to upgrade coaches to meet world standards.
Gabriel Opuana, who emerged as president of the NCA said: “Training of coaches is our main prerogative. To achieve this, we are going to partner with corporate bodies. We are going to rely less on the government. Coaches must have to improve on themselves so that the athletes will also improve.”
While speaking at the gathering, where more than 100 coaches applauded the long overdue creation of the NCA, which will represent all Nigerian sports coaches, he noted that in order to facilitate easy coordination of coaching and programme development, the NCA would cooperate with the Sports Ministry to ensure that all athletic federations have head coaches.
The NCA has pledged to collaborate closely with the newly formed Nigerian Olympic Committee in the meanwhile. Opuana added: “Coaches are ready to work with whoever emerges as executive. We need every aspect of our sports to work for the development of our sports.”
