SAN FRANCISCO, December 23, (THEWILL) – Kieran Trippier, English defender for La Liga club Atletico Madrid has been slammed with a 10-week ban for breaking betting rules concerning his move to Spain. The 30-year-old moved to the current league leaders in July 2019 from North London club Tottenham Hotspur in a move worth £20 million.
Charges were brought against the Englishman in May 2020 for bets made over his move. An independent commission, after hearing the case, found him guilty of one of the four alleged breaches brought against him.
With the defender’s ban set to run until February 28 next year, he will be unavailable for the first leg of Atletiico’s Champions League last 16 match against Chelsea.
The FA statement concerning the ban read:
“An independent regulatory commission was appointed to hear the case, with four of the alleged breaches found proven and three dismissed during a subsequent personal hearing.”
Trippier’s suspension from all football-related activity commences on Wednesday following the fulfillment of the prerequisite application to world football’s governing body FIFA, the FA added.
The versatile defender can play on the right wing, at right-back and as a right wing-back and has been capped 25 times for England. The limit on his ban gives him the chance to be considered for the rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament.
There are unconfirmed reports linking him with a January move to Manchester United, but any move may be ruled out until the summer if he cannot feature until March at the earliest as a cause of the ban.
