August 25, (THEWILL) – After leading England to victory at the Euro 2022 on home soil, Sarina Wiegman has been named the UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year for the 2021/2022 calendar.
In just 11 months after taking over as Lionesses coach in September 2021, Wiegman had turned a team known for losing in the semifinals of important competitions into the European champions.
Sonia Bompastor, the head coach of Lyon, and Martina Voss-Tecklenburg, whose Germany team lost to Wiegman’s England in the Euro 2022 championship game, were also recognised.
Wiegman won the Euro championship for the Netherlands, who she had earlier led to victory at the 2017 edition of the championship on home soil. The 52-year-old used the same starting lineup for all six games of Euro 2022, and she was commended for her use of impact substitutions, player management that focused on the individual, and composure under pressure.
The Lionesses took home their first piece of trophy after England, which won every game at the Euros, defeated Germany 2-1 in overtime in the championship match. While in command of the Netherlands, Wiegman was twice named to the UEFA Women’s Coach of the Year shortlist, but this is the first time she has won the prestigious honour.
