BEVERLY HILLS, February 27, (THEWILL) – Two Nigerian soldiers have been reportedly killed and four injured in an ambush by Boko Haram militants in the country’s North-Eastern state of Borno.
Reports indicate that the attack occurred on Monday as soldiers were travelling between the towns of Biu and Damboa.
“Our men fell into an ambush by Boko Haram terrorists while on their way to Damboa from Biu,” a military officer told AFP.
“They fought the terrorists and we lost two men in the fight. A military vehicle was also seized in the attack.”
However, the Deputy Director, Public Relations, of the Theatre Command, Colonel Clement Nwachukwu, said the two soldiers were evacuated to a hospital where they are receiving treatment.
“It’s been confirmed that yesterday afternoon, troops on patrol between Azir – Kubua along Damboa road encountered an ambush staged by elements of Boko Haram insurgents and successfully fought through the ambush.
“Information available to me now indicates that two members of the patrol team sustained injuries and are being stabilised.
“They have been evacuated for medical attention. Reinforcement immediately dispatched to track down the insurgents.”
Nwachukwu added that the newly dispatched reinforcement has recovered a vehicle hijacked by the insurgents during the encounter.
THEWILL recalls that Borno state has been at the heart of the jihadist insurgency that has killed 20,000 people and displaced 2.6 million more since 2009.
