July 15, (THEWILL) –Â A new date has been set after COVID-19 infections in the camp of Tyson Fury forced the British World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion to shut the camp down and go into self isolation which put his trilogy fight with American boxer Deontay Wilder off the originally scheduled date of July 24.
The confirmation came from Fury himself, who shared it via a post from his official Twitter account. The Brit boxer noted that the WBC and Ring heavyweight championship bout will take place on Saturday, October 9 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the same venue as the original bout.
The positive cases were reportedly widespread in Fury’s camp with multiple positive test results before all boxing-related activities were shuttered and the camp closed. The British boxer had to return to isolation in England until a negative test before he can begin a fresh preparation programme.
The postponement was another chapter in the long-winding story of the Fury versus Wilder fights, now in its third phase and expectedly Wilder’s manager Shelly Finkel said: “Deontay is disappointed” especially as so much had been put into the July 24 date, with much by way of time and material investment to get prepared.
THEWILL recalls that Fury beat Wilder to become WBC champion in February 2020 in Las Vegas, 14 months after the pair shared a thrilling draw in Los Angeles at the Staples Center. Since that February bout, neither boxer has fought.
