August 15, (THEWILL) –Â In their second Group C match of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, Nigeria’s Super Falconets defeated South Korea’s Taegeuk Ladies 1-0 at the Estadio Alajuela Morera Soro with an outstanding goal from Esther Onyenezide.
Due to the wet surface from the rainy conditions, the game was first delayed. In the first 15 minutes of play, when the game finally began, the Falconets, who are on the verge of making it to the quarterfinals, started off extremely brightly, but as the game went on, Christopher Danjuma’s ladies porous defense gave the Koreans confidence.
A Lee Suin free kick even struck the Nigerian goalpost as the Asians began to create chances to open the scoring. It nearly happened with 21 minutes remaining in the match, when captain Mun Ha-yeon’s 35-yard attempt had to be blocked off by Nigeria’s goalkeeper Omini Oyono, whose reflexes continued to keep Nigeria in the game.
Onyenezide, who had been dominant in midfield and had drawn a few fouls as a result, gave Nigeria the victory in the 83rd minute with a thundering long-range strike that goalkeeper Kim Kyeonghee was helpless to stop.
On Wednesday, August 17, at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Nigeria will play Canada in their final group match.
