February 16, (THEWILL) – Chelsea suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League last 16.
Despite a frenetic first half with chances at both ends, the teams went into the break goalless. Joao Felix squandered a couple of glorious opportunities for Chelsea while Marius Wolf and Sebastian taller, came close for the home side. After a barren first half, the game’s decisive moment arrived in the 63rd minute when Karim Adeyemi, struck a well-taken goal after a ruthless counter-attack, which Chelsea could not recover from.
Chelsea had a goal disallowed when Thiago Silva’s handball ended in the net and resulted in the centre-back being cautioned. Reece James and Enzo Fernandez, both had efforts saved by Gregor Kobel and Dortmund’s defence held strong. Emre Can even cleared Kalidou Koulibaly’s shot off the line to keep Dortmund’s narrow lead intact.
The Blues were left ruing missed opportunities as they failed to capitalise on their chances in Germany. The return match at Stamford Bridge on March 7, will give Chelsea a chance to turn the tie around, but they will have to improve their finishing to avoid another setback.
Chelsea’s focus now shifts to their upcoming English Premier League match at home against Southampton, while Dortmund prepares to host Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
