May 6, (THEWILL) – Paris Saint-Germain Manager, Luis Enrique, has downplayed the need for his side to score twice in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. Despite trailing 1-0 from the first leg in Germany last week, the Spaniard insists the aim is simply to win, even if it requires taking the tie to extra time.
“The aim isn’t to win by two goals, but to win,” Luis Enrique stated ahead of the Parc des Princes clash, adding: “If you think you have to score two goals, that seems like a big target. We just want to play and score. If we score in the 89th minute, it will carry on. We don’t need to score right away, we just want to win the game.”
The former Barcelona boss wants his players to concentrate on all aspects of their performance, not solely on attack. He accepts PSG could concede but urged calm if they do, highlighting the importance of a professional display at both ends. “We have to be 100% focused on attack and defence. If we concede a goal, it is not serious, we have to stay calm,” he stated.
Luis Enrique has repeatedly declared PSG will progress, saying the only French phrase he knows is “on va gagner” (we are going to win). He expects the vocal home support to be pivotal, describing the fans as “a driving force” who have backed the team impressively all season.
With a final place at stake, the 52-year-old called for patience from his star-studded side, who overturned a deficit against Barcelona in the previous round. “It will be an even game with a high level of play on and off the ball, so it will be tough for both teams,” he concluded.
