November 16, (THEWILL) – Before the deadline for the submission of preliminary bid dossiers on Wednesday, UEFA revealed that it has received three bids for the hosting of Euro 2028 and 2032.
The United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland jointly made a bid for the 2028 competition, and Turkey—which has never hosted a major tournament—also entered the running.
In their proposal, the football associations of England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland pledged to host an “unrivalled” competition.
The English FA’s bid comes in the wake of harsh criticism for how it handled fan unrest at the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium. The issue was disgraceful enough for an independent study to refer to it as a “day of national shame”.
Italy has not been selected as the single host of a major tournament since the World Cup in 1990, and Turkey both submitted bids for the 2032 edition. Final dossiers must be submitted by April 12 of 2023 for the hosts to be selected for that year’s European autumn.
