April 29, (THEWILL) – Following his spectacular match-winning performance for Feyenoord on Thursday, Super Eagles forward, Cyriel Dessers, has been named the UEFA Conference League Player of the Week.
The 27-year-old beat out fellow Feyenoord teammate Luis Sinisterra, AS Roma’s Lorenzo Pellegrini, and compatriot, Leicester City’s Ademola Lookman, to win the accolade.
Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian winger for the Foxes, finished third on the best player of the week list after his second-half strike earned the Foxes a 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium against Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
Dessers, on the other hand, was clearly the best of the group after his magnificent brace led Feyenoord to a 3-2 first-leg victory over Marseille in the semifinals.
As a result, the on-loan Genk striker became the first player in the newly formed Conference League to score ten goals. Dessers is also the competition’s all-time leading scorer, having previously shared the lead with AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham, who scored eight goals.
Dessers is favoured to win the Conference League Player of the Tournament at the end of the season.
If Feyenoord avoid defeat in the second leg in Marseille next week, they will proceed to the competition’s final and the club’s first European final in 20 years.
