June 22, (THEWILL) – The UFC heavyweight division has entered a new chapter following Jon Jones’ retirement, announced by UFC CEO Dana White during a press conference after the promotion’s debut event in Baku.
White confirmed that Jones, who won the undisputed belt in 2023 and had not defended it since, informed the UFC of his decision to step away from the sport and relinquish his title.
This announcement ends months of uncertainty surrounding the division’s direction and confirms Tom Aspinall as the new top dog.
Jones last competed at UFC 309 in November 2024, where he defeated former champion Stipe Miocic.
However, he refused to engage with interim titleholder Tom Aspinall despite mounting pressure from fans and media.
The stalemate had generated widespread frustration, culminating in a viral petition demanding that the UFC strip Jones of his belt.
White’s previous efforts to entice Jones back for a unification bout were unsuccessful, leaving the promotion with no choice but to act.
“Jon Jones called us last night and retired,” White said. “Jon Jones is officially retired.”
The timing of the announcement, made just after UFC’s Baku event, confirmed that the company had accepted Jones’ decision and moved forward by installing Aspinall as the undisputed heavyweight champion.
The decision ended what many fans regarded as a needlessly prolonged stalemate at the top of the division.
Aspinall had held the interim title since November 2023, when he stopped Sergei Pavlovich in the first round.
During Jones’ absence, the Englishman defended the belt against Curtis Blaydes, avenging a 2022 bout in London that ended prematurely due to injury. Aspinall had consistently campaigned for a title unification fight, and his elevation now clears the path for fresh matchups among the division’s elite.
Attention will now turn to Aspinall’s first title defence, with potential contenders including Ciryl Gane, Jailton Almeida, and Alexander Volkov.
The UFC has yet to confirm a date or opponent for his next appearance. However, with the championship picture finally resolved, the focus can shift to the next phase in one of the promotion’s most storied divisions.
