December 20, (THEWILL) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made a light-hearted request to boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk ahead of his heavyweight title defence against Tyson Fury, asking him to consider Britain’s military support when facing his opponent in Riyadh.
In a video message shared on Zelensky’s Telegram channel on Friday, the president referenced the crucial military partnership between Ukraine and the United Kingdom, specifically mentioning Storm Shadow missiles.
“All Ukrainians are on your side. Of course, Britain is helping Ukraine in a fight against Russia,” Zelensky stated in his message to Usyk.
The president continued with a diplomatic touch of humour.
He stated, We respect our partners. That’s why when you beat Fury, don’t hit him too hard, because we don’t want them to ban Storm Shadow.”
This comment follows reports from British media outlets that Ukraine had utilised Storm Shadow missiles in operations against Russia, though the UK government has maintained a position of neither confirming nor denying these reports.
The context of this interaction stems from Usyk’s victory over Fury in May 2024, which earned him the status of undisputed heavyweight champion.
The rematch, scheduled for Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, carries significance beyond the boxing ring, reflecting the broader geopolitical relationships between Ukraine, and Britain, and their ongoing military cooperation.
