July 22, (THEWILL) – Former World Cup winner, Samuel Umtiti, has officially announced his return to Ligue 1, signing a two-year contract with French club Lille.
The 29-year-old defender, who was released from his contract with Barcelona earlier this month, had been the subject of much speculation, with his former club, Lyon, also vying for his signature. However, Umtiti ultimately opted to join Lille, citing the club’s strong desire to have him as a key factor in his decision.
Lille president, Olivier Letang, called their acquisition of the veteran defender a “strong signal” for Ligue 1 to have a French world champion back in action. Umtiti’s return to his home country comes after a challenging four years marred by repeated injuries. Having put these setbacks behind him, the French defender asserted that he was “feeling good physically” and eagerly anticipating his time with Lille, who finished fifth in Ligue 1 last season. During the previous season, he was loaned to Italian club Lecce, where he made 25 appearances.
The accomplished defender, who secured two La Liga titles with Barcelona in 2018 and 2019, now aims to contribute to Lille’s success and remains hopeful for a chance to represent the French national team once again.
