February 23, (THEWILL) – Feyenoord have appointed former Netherlands international, Robin van Persie, as their head coach, the Rotterdam-based club confirmed on Sunday. The 41-year-old joins from fellow Eredivisie side, Heerenveen, where he managed the team to ninth position in the league table.
Van Persie returns to the club where he started his professional career, having previously served there during the 2021/2022 season under Dick Advocaat’s management team. The former English Premier League winner takes charge of Feyenoord during a crucial period, with the team currently third in the Eredivisie and preparing for their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie against Inter Milan.
“Everyone knows how special my bond with Feyenoord is,” said Van Persie, who began his playing career at the Dutch club before moving to England, where he won the EPL with Manchester United and FA Cup with Arsenal. Following those achievements, he spent time at Turkish side, Fenerbahce, before concluding his playing career at Feyenoord.
Feyenoord manager, Dennis te Kloese, welcomed the appointment, stating: “We are delighted that with Robin van Persie we can appoint a true club icon the new coach of Feyenoord.” The former striker takes immediate charge of first-team responsibilities, departing his role at Heerenveen mid-season.
The appointment is a significant step in Van Persie’s managerial career, following his first head coach position at Heerenveen, which he assumed in May 2024. His return to Feyenoord comes at a critical time in the season, with both domestic and European competitions reaching decisive stages.
