February 19, (THEWILL) – Former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has openly criticised the decision-making structure at the club, stating that responsibility lies with “a bit of everyone and a bit of no one.” The World Cup winner made these comments in an exclusive interview with The Athletic, reflecting on his time at the English football giant.
Varane, who departed United after Sir Jim Ratcliffe completed his minority investment, questioned the clarity of the club’s operational framework. “Even from the inside as a player, there was not a clear structure on how things would work,” Varane noted. He drew comparisons with his former club Real Madrid, noting that United lacked a “defined methodology” for recruitment, playing style and communication.
Despite Ratcliffe’s introduction of new executives including Omar Berrada as CEO, Jason Wilcox as technical director, and Sir Dave Brailsford as INEOS’ director of sport, Varane believed this created additional complications. The French defender explained that too many individuals were involved in decision-making, making it difficult to identify who held ultimate authority for key choices.
The centre-back admitted surprise at the contract extension given to manager Erik ten Hag following United’s lowest English Premier League finish in 2023/2024. According to Varane, “The connection with the group no longer existed,” suggesting a disconnect between management and players during his final months at the club.
Despite his criticisms, Varane concluded his comments with positive sentiments toward United: “I have so much respect and love for the club that I can only be positive. Even when I say things that are not going well, it is well-intentioned and constructive. It is not to point the finger at someone. I only wish the club well and hope they succeed.”
