August 20, (THEWILL) — Chelsea have completed the sale of defender Renato Veiga to Villarreal for a fee that could reach £25.5 million, including performance-related bonuses. The English Premier League club will retain a substantial sell-on clause in the agreement, which represents more than double their initial £12 million investment from summer 2024.
The 22-year-old Portugal international struggled for opportunities at Stamford Bridge, managing only one English Premier League start across 18 total appearances. His limited game time prompted a January loan move to Juventus, where he made 15 appearances and helped the Serie A giants qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The defender’s improved performances in Italy attracted interest from multiple Spanish clubs.
Villarreal moved decisively after Atlético Madrid’s proposed deal collapsed during earlier summer negotiations. The Yellow Submarine agreed personal terms with Veiga before finalising club-to-club discussions with Chelsea. The transfer is Villarreal’s second-most expensive signing in their history.
The departure creates a potential gap in Chelsea’s centre-back options, particularly with Levi Colwill sidelined for most of the season through injury. Manager Enzo Maresca may need to reassess his defensive resources with less than two weeks remaining in the transfer window.
Chelsea’s ability to generate significant profit on Veiga provides additional funds for other transfer targets, with several departures still being negotiated. The Blues remain active in multiple discussions with the September 1 transfer deadline approaching rapidly.
