July 01, (THEWILL) – 43-year-old American tennis star, Venus Williams, is determined to continue her career and potentially play until she turns 50.
As she prepares for her 24th Wimbledon appearance, Williams dismissed retirement speculation and stated that if anyone could achieve such longevity in the sport, it would be her. Despite her ranking slipping to 554 due to a persistent hamstring injury, the former world number one remains focused on the Grand Slam tournaments and maintaining her competitiveness.
Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champion, highlighted her motivation and the personal satisfaction she derives from reaching rare heights in her career. Reflecting on her early experiences at Wimbledon, where she made her debut in 1997 and suffered a first-round loss, Williams said: “When I first came here, it rained for five days in a row and we were just sitting around the locker room waiting to play. That was an interesting way to get started. I had zero expectations but now it’s much more of a different feeling.”
Over the years, she has accumulated an impressive record at the prestigious tournament, claiming the championship title in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, and 2008. Williams has also been a four-time runner-up, including a final against her sister, Serena.
Despite limited play since the previous year’s US Open, Williams recently showed she was not close to slowing with a notable victory over Camila Giorgi on grass in Birmingham. Her next match on Centre Court will be against wildcard recipient, Elina Svitolina.
