October 23, (THEWILL) – Max Verstappen secured his 15th Formula 1 victory of the season at the United States Grand Prix in Austin on Sunday. The Red Bull driver started sixth on the grid after a qualifying penalty, but fought his way through the field to take the checkered flag.
Verstappen overtook pole-sitter, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, in the early laps before passing Lando Norris for the lead just past half distance. Norris had led the early stages for McLaren after seizing first from Leclerc on lap one.
Hamilton closed in on Verstappen during the final laps as he chased a first win of 2022. Yet, despite late brake issues, Verstappen held firm to win by 2.2 seconds from Mercedes’ seven-time world champion. It was the Red Bull driver’s 50th F1 win overall.
Norris completed the podium ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, who struggled on a one-stop strategy late on. George Russell finished seventh for Mercedes after a disappointing weekend.
There was late drama further back as Fernando Alonso charged to ninth from the pit lane only to retire with suspected floor damage. His Aston Martin team-mate, Lance Stroll, inherited the final points position.
