May 08, (THEWILL) – Max Verstappen’s triumph at the Miami Grand Prix was met with a mixed reaction from the spectators in attendance with noticeable boos from some of those following the race.
Despite starting from ninth on the grid, the two-time and current world champion showcased his prowess by rapidly climbing up to second place behind his teammate, Sergio Perez, within a few laps. With 46 laps completed, Verstappen seized the opportunity to overtake Perez and claim the lead.
While he now enjoys a 14-point advantage over Perez in the championship standings, Verstappen’s victory was accompanied by boos from some of the onlookers, both before the race began and during the podium ceremony. In response to the negative reception, Verstappen brushed off the boos and acknowledged that such reactions are to be expected when one is at the top.
Speaking after the race, the Red Bull driver expressed his understanding, stating: “If I were driving in the back, nobody would be doing anything in terms of reaction. I think it is normal when you are winning and they don’t like who is winning.” Verstappen maintained a positive outlook, emphasising that he is unfazed by the criticism and solely focused on his own performance.
“To me, the most important thing is I take the trophy home and they go back to their houses and they can… have a nice evening.”
