April 11, (THEWILL) – In a significant blow to Leeds United and the football community, veteran defender Stuart Dallas has been compelled to retire from professional football at the age of 32, the club and the player announced on Wednesday.
The Northern Ireland international suffered a devastating broken leg injury during a match against Manchester City in 2022 and has been unable to make a full recovery despite extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation efforts.
“Over the past two years, the Leeds United medical team, along with the incredible surgeons in London, have worked tirelessly to help me recover from the injury I sustained,” Dallas stated, adding: “Sadly, despite their best efforts, and my body not progressing how we need it to, I must now accept the fact that my knee suffered irreparable damage and I will not be returning to play professional football. I am of course devastated by this news.”
Dallas, who earned 62 caps for the Northern Ireland national team, was a stalwart for Leeds United, making 266 appearances for the club and playing a crucial role in their promotion to the English Premier League in the 2019/2020 season.
The club paid tribute to the player’s immense contribution, stating: “Stuart is an icon of Leeds United and will always be welcome at Elland Road, his contribution will live long in the memory and he has cemented his place in history.”
