August 05, (THEWILL) – Nigeria’s remarkable journey through the Women’s World Cup “group of death” has set the stage for a potentially historic victory, as they face England in the round of 16.
Coach Randy Waldrum is not oblivious to the significance of a quarter-final berth, noting that it will be a “huge win” for the team’s history. Despite arriving with a 40th world ranking and facing off-pitch challenges, the Super Falcons’ stellar performance, including a 3-2 victory against Australia, has put them in the spotlight and generated buzz back home.
“It would be a huge win,” Waldrum told reporters on Sunday, a day ahead of Nigeria’s last-16 match with the Lionesses. “Obviously, with what we’ve accomplished, Nigeria is buzzing again from what I understand, and I don’t think people expected us to get out of the group and to get the results that we’ve gotten. So, I think it’s already been a big success.”
Waldrum commended his players’ focus and confidence on the field, as they managed to draw against Olympic champions Canada and Ireland in goalless encounters. The coach believes that a victory over England, the reigning European champions, could be transformational for Nigerian football and the nation as a whole.
Nigeria’s unexpected success has been a revelation, given their fourth-place finish in the African Cup of Nations, making them one of the three African nations to reach the round-of-16, alongside South Africa and Morocco.
“I have watched, just like you all have, this World Cup unfold and seen some of the storylines that are out there, with teams that are successful. The African teams, the talent is there, so maybe people outside of Africa may be shocked about it, but I don’t think those in Africa really are because they see the talent level,” he said.
Playing in their ninth World Cup, Nigeria’s journey has been filled with resilience and determination. Their previous best performance was a quarter-final appearance in 1999.
