October 08, (THEWILL) – Aston Villa were held to a 1-1 draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League on Sunday, missing the opportunity to break into the top four. Wolves equalised just two minutes after going behind through Hwang Hee-chan and Mario Lemina was sent off in added time.
Villa took the lead in the 53rd minute when Douglas Luiz was fouled by Hwang, with the ball moved wide to Pedro Neto who crossed for the South Korean to poke home from close range. However Wolves responded immediately, with Pau Torres turning in from Ollie Watkins’ cross after Villa failed to clear a free kick.
There were chances for both sides to win it late on. Torres almost scored an own goal before putting the ball behind, while Neto missed a golden opportunity for Wolves after good work from Sasa Kalajdzic. Watkins hit the post in the 12 minutes of added time but neither side could find a winner.
Lemina received a second yellow card for fouling Nicolo Zaniolo as Wolves ended the game with 10 men. The draw means Villa remain fifth, missing the chance to jump above Arsenal into fourth spot ahead of their match with champions Manchester City.
Wolves continue their improvement under interim manager Gary O’Neil, backing up last week’s surprise 2-1 win away to Manchester City. They remain 14th but are now four points clear of the relegation zone.
